After a 24-hour hiatus where he didn’t/couldn’t blog, Billmon came back from NYC and announced that he was turning off the Comments section of his blog – for all the reasons you would suspect. So many comments that it took a looong time to read them all, a change in the tenor – more piss-ant fighting, trolls, his desire for a life, and perhaps a less thoughtful community as it grew larger.
In the “Last Call” comments almost all of his regular readers (and many of the lurkers who have never commented) wished Billmon the barkeep well, and saluted his decision, especially because he would keep on posting his inarguably sound and elegant content.
I found it a very vibrant community, and a great place of learning, not least in watching the dynamics of this community. I can’t help but feel that it might have evolved into a next level of sharing and discourse in time, but we will now not know.
Thanks, Billmon, for what you created and nurtured. It was a great example of what can be done with a blog – with a good mind, good writing, an inviting style and good moderation.
