Harvard Biz Blog .. 5 Challenges to Business by Social Media

.

Good summary blog post by David Armano … Five Challenges Social Media Will Bring To Business.

For those of us who have been following and / or participating in this arena for some time, there is nothing new in what is presented in this blog post:

.

1. Integration into the business

2. Governance in a (clearly more transparent) operating environment

3. The culture of the organization (d’oh .. see the definition of wirearchy .. it’ll take a while to get there yet 😉

4. Human Resources (my previous professional career, and an area in which I still have relatively deep knowledge) .. this area is under-addressed even in all the ongoing discussion of Enterprise 2.0

I and esteemed colleague Harold Jarche will be talking about this in relative depth with a major Canadian corporation sometime soon (we’ve been asked but ironically it’s yet to be approved by the executive 😉

5. Measurement and ROI .. see the article co-authored with Jay Cross titled "Productivity in a Networked Era – ROII (Return on Investment in Interaction"

.

As I said, I don’t think there’s anything new or earth-shattering in Armano’s piece, but it’s a solid and concise summary.

That said, overcoming those challenges in an effective way will require significant adaptation of conventional mental models and leadership and management practices … for medium and large-sized organizations, it almost certainly will not be easy nor as quick as may be desired.

Just ask John Chambers of Cisco …

Oh my … I didn’t inadvertently make a funny in the parentheses in point #2 above, did I ?
