Two Lines That Have Stuck …

I watched a delicious little film the other night.

I don’t think it got particularly good reviews, though to be fair  it may have been almost completely overlooked here in North America – in other words, not even reviewed much at all.

That’s probably because it was a French film.  It’s titled Monsieur Ibrahim et les fleurs du Coran (now that I’ve looked it up, the link takes you to the imdb.com info and review and it got 7.2 stars out of 10).

In my opinion, this film was all about giving selflessly, into empty spaces. Also of interest, and unexpected, was the use of Sufism as the backdrop for Monsieur Ibrahim’s philosophical guidance of his young charge.

And for my money, the best acting work I’ve ever seen by Omar Sharif … delicate, whimsical, heartfelt … it was hard to believe he was acting, actually.

From the film:

Quand on veut apprendre quelque chose,

on ne prend pas une livre

When you want to learn, you don’t pick up a book

On parle a quelqu’un

You talk to someone
